| The World Owerri People’s Congress (WOPC) is the apex organization of Owerri people living outside the shores of Nigeria. Her primary mission is to promote the interest of Owerre people worldwide. Owerre people are a long-suffering people with a rich history and civilization that compares favorably with those of any other people in the world and we are proud of it. Like all peace loving people, we have a decent respect for the opinion of others and especially those of our neighbors. The typical Owerre person is egalitarian by nature – believing that all people are, in principle, equal and should enjoy equal social, political, and economic rights and opportunities.
We bear witness that Owerre-land is among the most peaceful in our country, Nigeria. And, even in the face of provocations by individuals who are bent on zonal triumphalism, Owerre people have resisted the urge to become restive. Now, because of their laid-back dispositions, their live and let live philosophy, and, or laissez-faire attitude in most things, some have in error, concluded that Owerre people are just free-spirits without a care in the world and had assumed as a consequence that their interests can be harmed with impunity and prejudice. Owerre people love their state and country and have shown time and again their belief in constituted authority and the rule of law. The people of Owerre were steadfast in creating the conditions that gave rise to developments in other parts of Imo state, first, by fighting for and achieving its creation. The fact is not debatable that the City of Owerri has been and continues to be the hub or creative engine for the social, economic and political transformations that are currently taking place in other parts of Imo state. The fact is also not disputed that the vanguard contributions of our forebears gave rise to the citing of the Imo state capital at Owerri. It was the indomitable Owerre-spirit that has allowed the significant achievements we have and share today with our neighbors from Orlu and Okigwe senatorial zones. Owerre people did not undermine the interest of any other group or zone in order to achieve the feats that we did, and that’s just who we are Owerre people have never campaigned or demanded that politico-socio-economic benefits or recognitions won or earmarked for Orlu or Okigwe senatorial zones of Imo state be taken from them and given to an Owerre person even when the tilt was in their favor. We have never asked that an Orlu person be de-appointed from a significant federal position, let alone passing legislation for it. Therefore, imagine the anger and disgust that Owerre people all over the world felt waking up on the morning of December 1, 2010 and reading in the pages of national newspapers of the resolution of Tuesday, November 30, 2010 of the Imo House of Assembly that was sponsored and engineered by fringe Orlu triumphalist agitators and their prostitute Owerre friends in the Imo House of Assembly calling for the resignation of Captain Emmanuel Ihenacho, the Nigerian Minister of the Interior, an Owerre son. Imagine also that this same rogue Imo State legislature directed Governor Ikedi Ohakim to use all elements of his state power to ensure that Captain Ihenacho is forced out as Nigerian Minister of the Interior should the Minister ignore their call to resign. That neither the Imo House of Assembly nor Governor Ohakim has any authority over the federal minister of the interior was not a consideration for them. The house resolution was intended as an aggravation and has nuisance value ‘only’. This resolution was politically motivated and was designed to embarrass the Minister. Well, in embarrassing the Minister of the Interior, they contemporaneously embarrassed all Owerre people. Saint Augustine said a long time ago that the legitimacy of a state rests upon its claim to do justice. ‘Take away justice’, he said, and what is a state but a large rubber band? The Imo House of Assembly cannot legislate injustice or evil without recognizing that in doing so they were pari-passu setting the conditions necessary for a significant uprising. The consequences of this reckless action of the Imo House of Assembly now bear watching. Captain Ihenacho’s only sin is that he is an Owerre man who was offered the Minister of the Interior position by President Goodluck Jonathan which he accepted. This Imo state house of assembly members from Orlu senatorial zone and their friends of Owerre extraction wanted this position for someone from Orlu zone. Unfortunately, there were no bright minds in their midst to warn them of the consequences of their actions or, if there were, they were not listened to. It is the view of these state house of assembly members that although the Minister of the Interior’s responsibilities span all 36 states of Nigeria, and is trusted by the President of the federal republic of Nigeria and the Senate that confirmed him to faithfully discharge his duties and advance the cause of all Nigerians regardless of their senatorial zones; that Captain Ihenacho cannot adequately represent the parochial interest of Orlu senatorial zone. What a warped way of thinking? Therefore, we ask, what is their interest and why is it at odds with those of the other senatorial zones in the country? Is it perhaps because Captain Ihenacho is a British trained technocrat who is not given to their crooked ways? We recall that under President Umaru Yar’adua of blessed memory that former Governor Achike Udenwa, an Orlu man, was the Federal Minister of Commerce and not a whimper was heard from Owerre people concerning his appointment. Owerre people did not seek to have him removed and neither were they jealous of his appointment. We believed then that the former governor was there to serve the interest of all Nigerians regardless of their senatorial zones and that his policies were driven by hard facts and not by his predilection for his senatorial zone. This stance was perfectly in consonance with our egalitarianism. The World Owerri People’s Congress makes the following observations and serves notice to these triumphalist agitators from Orlu Senatorial Zone and others who might harbor the same ambitions that: Whereas, Orlu members of the Imo House of Assembly and their crooked Owerre house friends sponsored and passed a resolution calling for the resignation of the Nigerian Minister of the Interior, Captain Emmanuel Ihenacho, without cause, and to the great consternation of Owerre people, and; Whereas, the Governor of Imo state, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, was directed by the house resolution to use all elements of his state power to pressure President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to actualize their demand of Orlu triumphalism over Owerri, and; Whereas, Governor Ikedi Ohakim has remained mum over this insult on Owerre people without using his good office to ensure that this nuisance resolution by the Imo House of Assembly against the interest of Owerre people was vacated, which to Owerre people betrayed his complicity and acquiescence, and; Whereas, former Governor Achike Udenwa, an Orlu son, relocated vital institutions and economic resources such as university, hospital, and other state parastatals from Owerre senatorial zone to Orlu senatorial zone during his tenure and engineered the most aggressive capital flight from the state’s treasury to his Orlu senatorial zone to the detriment of Owerre people, and; Whereas, the patience and tolerance of Owerre people are constantly being challenged and tested with unrelenting provocations from fringe elements of Orlu senatorial zone without being restrained by the more moderate and peace loving citizens of Orlu senatorial zone; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that every Owerre person regardless of their residence or location has a duty to use all elements of our peoples’ power to ensure that this unjust resolution against Captain Emmanuel Ihenacho, the Nigerian Minster of the Interior, and by extension, Owerre people, by the Imo House of Assembly is reversed and that the Imo House of Assembly atones for their transgression; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the erring members of the Imo House of Assembly who engineered and sponsored this unjust resolution and insult against Owerre people are held accountable for their action until they can satisfactorily explain their actions to all of us; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Owerre house members who voted to replace Captain Ihenacho with an Orlu person including those who claimed to have been paid off no longer continue to represent us; since they are no longer representing the interest of Owerre people but the interest of their Orlu paymasters, and that they are forever barred from enjoying any positions of honor within Owerre-land and Imo State; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the so called Owerre political godfathers and mothers who gave their blessings to their stooges in the Imo House of Assembly for money are hereby warned to desist from harming the interest of Owerre people and are forever barred from enjoying any positions of honor within Imo State and beyond, and; THEREFORE, BE IT ALSO RESOLVED that Owerre people by the thousands are called upon to demonstrate in front of the Imo House of Assembly and the Governors house and offices for as long as it takes until the aforementioned demands are met or until government understands that we the people of Owerre will no longer tolerate their continuing malfeasance in the name of governance, and; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Owerre royal fathers who stood in solidarity with Captain Ihenacho and spoke against this pathetic resolution of the Imo House of Assembly are hereby recognized for their exemplary leadership, grit and guts and that all Owerre royal fathers are hereby called upon without delay to lead this fight and save the hearts and soul of our people.
